Savannah's River Street is one of the most iconic and vibrant areas of Savannah, Georgia, offering a perfect blend of history, charm, and modern attractions. Located along the Savannah River, about 1.5 miles from Amethyst Garden Inn, this historic waterfront district is known for its picturesque, bustling atmosphere, and scenic views. Originally built in the early 19th century, River Street retains its old-world charm with historic buildings that once served as cotton warehouses. These have been transformed into shops, restaurants, bars, and hotels. The cobblestone streets, made from ballast stones brought by ships, add to the district’s unique aesthetic. 

River Street is a hub for festivals and events throughout the year including St. Patrick’s Day festivities, Oktoberfest, and the Fourth of July fireworks show. The riverwalk provides stunning views of the Savannah River, where visitors can watch large cargo ships, riverboats, and ferries pass by. Don't miss the First Friday Fireworks display happening each first Friday of the month.

Parking Garages:  River Street, Bryan Street, Whitaker Street. Surface lots and metered parking are also available near River Street.
Free DOT Express Shuttle:  The shuttle runs every 10 minutes at 18 stops throughout the Historic District and is available seven days a week. Take the Forsyth Loop Shuttle (from Forsyth Park) to the Downtown Loop at a connecting stop to River Street.

The African-American Monument

The World War II Monument

The World War II Monument, officially titled "A World Apart," is a significant landmark located along Savannah's historic River Street.  Dedicated in November 2010, the monument features a split bronze and copper globe, symbolizing the division between the European and Pacific theaters during World War II. Inside, the names of 527 Chatham County residents who lost their lives in the war are inscribed, honoring their sacrifice. The location on River Street is historically significant, as Savannah's shipyards were instrumental in constructing Liberty ships during the war.
